MADISON – State legislators are debating how much auto insurance drivers must carry.

While Wisconsin drivers would still be required to carry car insurance, a bill that passed the Senate by a 25-7 vote Tuesday would repeal a lot of other requirements passed in 2009 by a then Democrat-led legislature.

Allstate Insurance has agreed to stop selling “Your Choice Auto” (YCA) insurance program in California, in response to a challenge brought by the nonprofit Consumer Watchdog. The company has stopped issuing new YCA policies, and will completely phase out the approximately 150,000 existing YCA policies in California by November 2011.

The New Year brings new changes and for Texans driving with liability car insurance, you will soon pay more for coverage.

Drivers will have to increase their minimum liability coverage from $25,000 to $30,000 for each person injured and coverage for each accident will jump from $50,000 per accident to $60,000.

Seven insurance companies have filed recent lawsuits against Toyota, attempting to recover money paid to cover crashes they blame on sudden acceleration.

Texas drivers will need to purchase more automobile insurance at the start of 2011 to complete a two-year plan to update minimum liability coverage required.

Jerry Hagins, spokesman for the Texas Department of Insurance, said the increase is “long overdue” because of higher vehicle repair and medical costs. For those who carry the minimum amount of auto liability insurance now—about half the drivers in the state—the new rules would mean premiums would go up 2-3 percent.
